โ [Verse 1]
You ask me if I love you and I choke on my reply
I’d rather hurt you honestly than mislead you with a lie
โ [Pre-Chorus]
And who am I to judge you on what you say or do?
I’m only just beginning to see the real you โ
โ Like everyone else, Iโve seen discussions of Substackโs AI detection tool all over my Substack feed; that it doesnโt work, that it disproportionately punishes and affects certain groups of people and not others. I share all those worries, and more.
โ That said, I canโt help but feel our collective efforts to live in a better world are woefully unambitious.
โ I donโt want to live in a world where the use of AI writing becomes as ubiquitous as using the internet and nobody polices that writing.
โ I want to live in a world where people have access to an education that teaches them how to read and write, because those skills are essential and rapidly dwindling. AI cannot and should not replace those skills.
โ I want to live in a world where economic hardship and social isolation donโt drive people to use and engage with AI in a desperate last attempt to โmake somethingโ of themselves.
โ I want to live in a world where tech autocrats donโt get to decide how ordinary people behave and we all waste our time sitting around arguing about whether Substack should then police who succumbs to that behaviour.
โ Our biggest problem today โ and it has existed since long before AI โis the gradual eroding of the human imagination and spirit to dream bigger and demand more
โ
THEN THE SCHMALTZ, CHICK โ ER, MAAM
โ And sometimes when we touch
The honesty’s too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you ’til I die
‘Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you ’til the fear in me subsides โ
